The U.S. Supreme Court agreed on Friday to hear a bid by religious parents to keep their children out of classes in a Maryland public school district when LGBT storybooks are read, the latest case to come to the justices involving the intersection between religion and LGBT rights.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear an appeal from parents in suburban Washington who want to pull their children from elementary school classes that use books featuring LGBTQ characters.

Parents in Montgomery Count, Maryland, want to be able to opt out of instruction on gender and sexuality that they say goes against their religious convictions.

The Supreme Court took up a new dispute on the tensions between LGBT rights and religious rights by agreeing to hear a claim made by parents of elementary school students in Maryland who objected to books available in classrooms concerning gender transition and same-sex relationships.

The US Supreme Court said it will consider whether a Maryland school system is violating the Constitution by incorporating LGBTQ-friendly books into the elementary school curriculum without giving parents the right to opt out.
