Two men died in the violence on Democracy Street, in the Renaissance Park neighborhood off Tryon Road, and a Raleigh police officer remained hospitalized after the shooting. A large police truck with a ram attached to its front end remained in the alley on the street’s 600 block, where the garage door was smashed in.

Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson called First Class Officer Max Gillick a hero after he was critically wounded responding to a deadly shooting call.

The victim and the suspect in the shooting on Democracy Street were both over 70. A police officer remains hospitalized.
