The sudden shutdown of millions of dollars in federal funding to Columbia University this month is already disrupting medical and scientific research at the school as it confronts a Friday deadline to bow to government demands for sweeping changes in how it deals with dissent on campus.

Columbia University has agreed to a list of demands by the Trump administration in order to start negotiations on restoring $400 million in federal funding that was stripped from the university earlier this month.

Among the most contentious of the nine demands, Columbia agreed to place its Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies department under a new official, the memo said, taking control away from its faculty.
