DeepSeek, which in late November unveiled DeepSeek-R1, an answer to OpenAI’s o1 “reasoning” model, is a curious organization. It’s backed by High-Flyer Capital Management, a Chinese quantitative hedge fund that uses AI to inform its trading decisions.

DeepSeek put its algorithm to the test by comparing it with three other open-source LLMs: the previous-generation DeepSeek-V2, Llama 3.1 405B and Qwen2.5 72B. DeepSeek-V3 achieved higher scores across all nine of the coding and math benchmarks that were used in the evaluation. It also proved better at a range of text processing tasks.

“Comprehensive evaluations demonstrate that DeepSeek-V3 has emerged as the strongest open-source model currently available and achieves performance comparable to leading closed-source models like GPT-4o and Claude-3.5-Sonnet,” read the technical paper.
