The once-daily pill, currently under investigation, is being studied for adults with type 2 diabetes who are not on any anti-diabetic medication and have been managing their condition through diet and exercise alone.

Savvy pharma-stock investors know that an oral GLP-1 drug from Novo Nordisk called Rybelsus has been on the market as a diabetes treatment since 2019. It's an orally available version of semaglutide, which is the same active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy.

Eli Lilly's experimental pill worked as well as blockbuster drug Ozempic to lower weight and blood sugar in a trial of diabetes patients, and the company said it expects to seek regulatory approvals by the end of the year.
