On one level, permanent ineligibility should mean just that -- permanence and not permanent until the whims of a commissioner lead us elsewhere.

Commissioner Rob Manfred announced Tuesday that Pete Rose, Shoeless Joe Jackson, and other players permanently banned by the sport would have their statuses restored at death.

The decision, which comes after Rose died in September 2024 at 83, would allow Rose, Jackson and others to be considered for the Hall of Fame by the Historical Overview Committee.
