One teen is dead, and another was able to climb out of an icy river after a tragic snowmobile accident in southwestern Alaska over the weekend.

A 15-year-old boy whose snowmobile fell through a hole into an icy river was found dead, Alaska State troopers reported. The boy and another youth were snowmobiling on the frozen Kuskokwim River when they ran into an open hole in the ice at 6:08 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, troopers said in a news release.

Troopers said the incident happened about 8 miles upriver from Kalskag, and one juvenile was able to get out of the river to safety.

A search and rescue operation was launched after Cole Gilila vanished under the ice while driving a snowmobile.

Troopers say Cole Gilila was riding with another boy Saturday when the snowmachine went through the ice near Kalskag.
