Brazil's leftist leader has condemned Donald Trump over the US threat to impose tariffs on Brazilian goods. Trump says the tariffs are punishment for legal proceedings against conservative ex-President Jair Bolsonaro.

"In light of the urgency of the matter, the Brazilian government reiterates its interest in receiving comments from the U.S. government on the proposal," the statement said, suggesting there were "areas of negotiation where we could further explore mutually agreed solutions.

The Trump administration launched a trade investigation against Brazil on Tuesday, just one week after blasting Brasília for its treatment of ally former President Jair Bolsonaro. The trade investigation ostensibly regards unfair trade practices.
