There's a new top Democrat on the influential House Oversight Committee. Rep. Robert Garcia of California won the job in a closed-door vote Tuesday, defeating Rep.

Calif., won a majority of votes on the first ballot to become the House Democratic Party's top member on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

Garcia, 47, in just his second term, defeated a more senior lawmaker to succeed the late Rep. Gerry Connolly on the panel, which provides oversight of the Trump administration.
