The jackpot hit an estimated $1 billion ahead of Tuesday’s Christmas Eve drawing, Mega Millions announced. A lucky Mega Millions player might be receiving a $448.8 million cash prize as a Christmas present this year. It’s just the seventh time in the game’s 20-year history that the jackpot has soared past $1 billion, the lottery said.

There were no tickets sold with all six numbers in the latest drawing of the multi-state Mega Millions lottery, pushing the estimated jackpot for Tuesday's drawing to $62 million.

The jackpot for the Dec. 27 drawing is $1.15 billion, according to Mega Millions. It's the fifth largest jackpot in the game's history. Mega Millions tickets are sold in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

“We know that many people will likely receive tickets to Friday’s drawing as holiday gifts, and what a gift that would turn out to be if you ended up with a ticket worth a $1.15 billion jackpot,” Joshua Johnston, lead director for the Mega Millions Consortium, said in a news release before the jackpot rose again to $1.22 billion.
