The tariff fight between the world's two largest economies spiraled into greater peril Wednesday as President Donald Trump tried to narrow his global trade war into a direct — and risky — faceoff with Beijing.
Trump kept the pressure on China and immediately hiked the tariff on Chinese imports to 125% from the 104% level that kicked in on Wednesday. In a tit-for-tat tariff escalation, China slapped on an 84% duty on U.S. imports on Wednesday.
The stock market appeared poised for a reversal of the previous day’s blistering stock market rally as attention shifted to a potential U.S.-China trade war.
