Sovereignty to Skip 2025 Preakness After Winning Kentucky Derby, Ends Triple Crown Bid
According to WBAL-TV's Greg Ng, 1/ST Executive Vice President Mike Rogers said Tuesday that he was informed by trainer Bill Mott that Sovereignty will not run in the upcoming Preakness Stakes. Last weekend, Sovereignty beat out Journalism to win the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

It’s been seven years since the post-time favorite won the Kentucky Derby. Justify — who went on to become horse racing’s 13th, and most recent, Triple Crown champion — was the last race-time favorite to win the Derby when he did so in 2018 at Churchill Downs in Louisville.

As expected it was Citizen Bull and Neoequos who set the early pace at the front, but as they came around the final turn to the home stretch, the favorite Journalism and Sovereignty made their late charge to the front. In the end it was Sovereignty that had more speed to close and came across the finish line first ahead of Journalism and Baeza.
