Up in the hills 2 miles south-east of Matlock, Bonsall has a charming atmosphere all of its' own. In the sloping market square is the unusual 17th century cross, set on top of 13 circular stone steps.

Bonsall is a village and civil parish in the Derbyshire Dales on the edge of the Peak District. The civil parish population, including Brightgate and Horse Dale, was 775 at the 2001 Census, increasing to 803 at the 2011 Census.

It is right on the edge of the Peak District. It is on two of the regions long distance paths – the Limestone Way and Peak District Boundary Walk. The main road to Bonsall climbs northward from beside the Via Gellia Mill.

Bonsall village is set in a deep sided dale beneath Masson Hill, a mile east of Matlock Bath and a mile north of Cromford in Derbyshire.
