After Adam lands a job as a server at a 50's-themed diner managed by Johnny Atkins, Pop-Pop becomes Adam's worst nightmare of a customer and gets his grandson fired. Pop-Pop later admits he misses having Adam around, and after apologizing, he gets Adam re-hired.

Meanwhile, Erica reluctantly decides to attend the homecoming dance, choosing to go with band geek Johnny Atkins (Sean Marquette), but after finding out she's one of two girls he's taking, she backs out and asks Geoff to go, but they decide to just hang out at the local Wawa instead.

When Johnny sees that Adam has a passion for Highlander, he suggests they could create their own club, but Adam decides to betray him, leading into a war. They reconcile at the end, though Atkins's girlfriend Carla leaves him for Dave Kim.

Jonathan 'Johnny' Atkins is a custodian and former student at William Penn Academy and a recurring character in The Goldbergs and Schooled. He is portrayed by Sean Marquette. Much like Barry Goldberg, Johnny seems to have an oddly high opinion of himself.
