Great 360 views and ideal hiking conditions on a perfect sunny fall day! Lots of the trail is in the shade until the scramble. Once you get to the rock, keep straight and climb up through the crevice instead of following the trail to the right.

Whether you summit or not, make sure to catch a little side trail viewpoint, just half a mile from the trailhead. There is a beautiful flat spot where the trees open up, giving you views of Mount McLoughlin. Pilot Rock is a really gorgeous little local hike.

For those comfortable on steep, but solid rock, a scramble to Pilot's summit will provide 360-degree views for miles around. The trailhead is usually accessible year-round but may be closed by snow between November and May. In winter, the trails and roads around the rock are popular with snowshoers.

Pilot Rock Trail is 3 miles out and back, fairly well traveled and nicely maintained. This trail is easy enough for a group of beginners with a nice challenge at the end for the adventurers.
